The Chinatown Pro Bono Legal Clinic takes place every second Saturday of the month on the third floor of Chinese American Service League, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Registration ends at 1:30 PM. We rely on volunteer attorneys from various law firms and government agencies—7 to 13 participate each month.
Attorneys from various law firms and government agencies volunteer at the Chinatown Pro Bono Legal Clinic and provide free legal consultation for walk-in clients on matters such as family law, real estate, landlord-tenant, immigration, housing, contracts, consumer fraud, employment, landlord-tenant, probate, estate and healthcare planning, collections, some criminal and torts, and violations of municipal and regulatory law.
Law students from the vicinity conduct client intake, help with legal research and interpret between attorneys and clients to facilitate consultation if needed. Attorney consultation is always free during the clinic. All fee-generating cases are referred to private attorneys.
For non-fee generating cases, if clients need further representation, the clinic will attempt finding attorneys for pro bono representation or take on such representation when appropriate. For cases that cannot be represented, the clinic will give referrals to other non-profit agencies, pro bono and private attorneys.
