30 Faces for 30 Years: DAVID WU

David Wu

Mr. Bing Shu Wu (David) immigrated to the US in March, 2001.  He has electrical engineering and business administration background and related work experience in China.

As soon as Mr. Wu settled in Chicago, he started to look for jobs to support his family. Due to language barrier and lack of local workforce skill, the only job Mr. Wu could find is an overnight printing worker position at a local Chinese newspaper. Since the overnight working hours greatly prevented Mr. Wu from enjoying family life with his wife and daughter, in 2006, he started thinking of changing career.

Through CASL’s assistance, customer found a deli cook position at a cafeteria of a Chicago University. However, customer was not satisfied being an entry level deli cook. He felt a strong need to improve on his culinary skill and get advanced in this industry.  To do that, he needed intensive Western culinary skill training and English skill training.

At this time, Chinese American Service League’s Chef Training Program caught his eye. It was ideal for him considering his situation. He decided to go for this training immediately so that he would be well-equipped to secure a job and advance in the food service industry. David then applied and was accepted into our 61st Chef Training Program.

David had not only successfully completed his full-time training in four months, but also graduated as honor student. His English skill was improved a lot as well.

After several job interviews with different employers, David finally got his dream job. He was hired as Banquet Cook at Chicago’s Top Luxury Hotel - Trump International Hotel and Tower in March 2008 with a starting wage of $14.5 per hour. He has worked hard and is a true team worker.

Mr. Wu is very happy with his job and very grateful to our assistance. He expresses that because the training and job opportunities we provided, he got essential skills to develop his career and has achieved self-sufficiency. His goal is to become a Chef one day.

Mr. Wu’s story is just one of many successful stories of customers served by JTED program at Chinese American Service League.
